Normal Size Of Ovary To Get Pregnant

A female reproductive system includes ovaries, fallopian tubes (tubes connecting the ovaries to the uterus), and the uterus. Ovaries are roughly the shape and size of an almond, and play a major role in the female’s reproductive health.  The ovaries are small, oval-shaped glands that produce ovum (egg) and also have an important role to play in the production of hormones. Ovaries make estrogen and progesterone,  When the ovaries release an egg, it meets the sperm in the fallopian tube to fertilize and produce an embryo. When the embryo implants in the uterine lining, it leads to a pregnancy.

A normal ovary is usually 3cm long, 2.5 cm wide, and 1.5 cm thick. It can also be said that the normal ovary size in mm is 30mm long, 25mm wide, and 15mm thick. This is about 0.8cc to 12.7cc. Having large ovaries or small ovaries than what is normal can impact the ability to get pregnant easily.

Factors that Affect Ovary Size

Factors Affect Ovary Size

Several factors can affect ovary size, they are –

  • Age – The ovary size is small pre-puberty (before the person starts getting their periods) and post-menopause (when the periods stop happening due after a person is of a certain age). As a person ages, their ovaries get smaller and the ovarian reserve also decreases. As ovarian reserve gets smaller, ovum count also gets smaller which means with age the quantity of eggs in ovaries reduces.
  • Ovarian issues – Issues affecting the ovaries such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Cysts, and tumours may change the size of the ovaries. If the doctor thinks any of these is making it difficult to conceive, they will treat those conditions with medications or surgery.
  • Hormonal Stimulation – When ovaries are stimulated to increase the quantity of eggs (Such as in IVF) it may affect the size of the ovaries.
  • Pregnancy – The changing levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy can cause ovaries to change their size during pregnancy.

If ovary size is not normal, the doctor would find the cause and suggest the treatment.

Impact Of Ovary Size

Now that you know normal size of ovary in mm, it is important to know how ovary size can impact chances to conceive.

  • Smaller ovaries may mean smaller ovarian reserve. This means that if the ovary size is small, the number of eggs the ovary produces may also be less. It is for this reason that ultrasounds & ovarian reserve tests are conducted to have an idea of whether the female has sufficient eggs required for IVF & other infertility treatments.
  • Larger ovaries do not mean larger egg reserves. Ovaries which are large abnormally may be due to hormonal problems, cysts or tumours which can impact ovulation (release of eggs from ovaries). If you have large ovaries, your doctor would determine the cause and treat the root cause.

Having healthy ovaries is crucial to improve pregnancy rates.

How to Improve Health of the Ovaries

How to Improve Health of the Ovaries

If you’re wondering if there is something you can do to maintain normal size of ovary in mm, there are measures you can take to help your ovaries and reproductive system be healthy.

  • Have an optimum weight – Being overweight or underweight can be harmful for your reproductive system, including the ovaries. Maintaining a healthy weight improves your overall health which supports reproductive health.
  • Be active – Having a sedentary lifestyle is bad for your health. Walk, swim, do yoga, or simply dance to include some form of workout in your daily routine.
  • Quit smoking & alcohol – Consumption of alcohol and tobacco is bad for your health and fertility, so avoid it if you’re trying to conceive.
  • Eat a healthy diet – Have a diet that is nutrient-dense and full of macronutrients and multi micronutrients which improves your fertility.
  • Stay stress free – Avoid stressing yourself and practice meditation, indulge in hobbies, and do things you enjoy to keep your hormones balanced.

Sometimes it’s possible that despite having a healthy diet, routine & lifestyle, ovary size may still not be as desired.
